Notes. Earlier in the week we visited Lands End the most westerly point of this fair land, it seems appropriate that we should also visit The Lizard Peninsular, the southern most point. The weather gods have smiled on us all week, the storms, and there's been many have come in the night gifting us with good weather throughout daylight hours, unfortunately not today, we found ourselves driving through heavy rain en route to Lizard village, hopefully the starting point for today's little walk. A word of warning, this walk was a short distance on the map but this is deceptive, the coastal path was extremely time consuming, no severe gradients it just seemed to swallow up the hours.
From Lizard village we headed west passed the public loos to access Pentreath Lane, here a finger-post invited us to Kynance Cove, we left the track climbed a stile to discover the first stretch of field walking was along the top of a wall, rather novel. We descended into a sheltered cops, as the rain was falling we donned waterproofs before continuing through green pastures. After crossing the final stile we stepped onto a tarmac lane, across the lane another path lead through heath land, stoney in places wet in others this path guided us to Kynance Cove, said to be one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall.
After exploring the cove we joined the coastal path heading south towards Lizard Point. Above stunning cliffs we strolled, far below our feet waves crashed onto rocky beaches, above Pentreath Beach we walked, round delightful Caerthillan Cove then above Crane Ledges, Holseer Cove came and went, we enjoyed marvellous views from Venton Hill Point before rounding Lizard Point to join a narrow tarmac lane (Lighthouse Road). A good path ran parallel to the lane, this path with it's many puddles guided us back to the village.
A novel way to cross a field.
In the shelter of this small cops we decide to don our waterproofs.
Not the best path on a wet day but it's the gateway to the most beautiful cove in Cornwall.
Our first view of Kynance Cove.
Lots of white water, on a day like today it's an exciting place to visit, “down to the beach”.
The black rocks of Kynance Cove.
Looking to Lion Rock with Lizard village visible through the gap.
Turquoise seas (when the sun shines), white sand, islands, caves and unexpected views, it's easy to see why this has been a popular place since Victorian times.
Lion Rock with views to Lizard Point, our route follows the line of cliffs all the way around the point.
Pentreath Beach with Lizard village in the background.
Looking back to Lion Rock with The Bishop and Gull Rock behind.
Absolutely spectacular coastal scenery, Caerthillan Cove with Crane Ledges beyond.
Views back over Pentreath Beach, Lion Rock and The Bishop guard the entrance to Kynance Cove.
